Results: Of the 116 patients studied, 57.7% developed hypocalcemia after parathyroidectomy....High preoperative alkaline phosphatase (ALP), low preoperative corrected calcium, high preoperative parathyroid (PTH), and younger age were shown to be significantly higher in patients who developed hypocalcemia after parathyroidectomy....Multivariate logistic regression showed a low preoperative corrected calcium level was an independent predictor of postoperative hypocalcemia (p = 0.036)....A high level of preoperative alkaline phosphatase was also considered an independent predictor of hypocalcemia development (OR = 1.007, 95% CI: 1.002-1.012)....Preoperative ALP and preoperative corrected calcium were shown to be independent predictors of hypocalcemia development.

Transient hypocalcemia or hypoparathyroidism was defined as a drop in serum calcium below laboratory reference range postthyroidectomy that resolved within 6 mo....Common complications like transient hypocalcemia or hypoparathyroidism was found in 24% (95% CI: 0.2-0.3, I2 = 91%) and transient laryngeal nerve injury was 2% (95% CI: 0.01-0.02, I2 = 35%) of patients....Permanent hypocalcemia or hypoparathyroidism was found in 3% (95% CI: 0.02-0.04, I2 = 65%) patients....Conclusions: Pediatric thyroid surgery, although safe, has a high risk of transient hypocalcemia or hypoparathyroidism. Other complications remain under 3%.

First, it underscores the importance of recognizing that refractory hypocalcemia and hypokalemia can often be linked to untreated hypomagnesemia so that timely diagnosis, effective management, and minimization of hospitalizations can be ensured....Second, this case highlights the unusual timing of symptomatic hypomagnesemia and subsequent hypocalcemia and hypokalemia despite years of prior PPI usage without prior known complications.

Symptomatic postoperative hypocalcemia was seen in 54 (69%), with 28 (36%) requiring intravenous calcium supplementation, and this was positively correlated with the preoperative ALP and PTH values.

Diagnostic evaluation revealed severe hypocalcemia with hypomagnesemia, QT prolongation, and episodes of non-sustained ventricular tachycardia. The condition was managed with calcium and magnesium supplementation....Discussion: Hypocalcemic seizures are rare in adults and are typically associated with severe hypocalcemia and cardiovascular instability, including ventricular dysrhythmias.

Ionized hypocalcemia was associated with plasma administration in dogs (p = 0.038). No significant correlation was found between iCa and iMg disturbances and length of hospitalization in dogs (respectively p = 0.62 and p = 0.62) or cats (respectively p = 0.62 and p = 0.27)....Dogs and cats with hypocalcemia were more likely to receive plasma. Mean iMg values were lower in survived dogs than dogs that did not survive.

We report a case of a 60-year-old female who presented with generalized weakness, lethargy, and severe electrolyte abnormalities, including profound hyponatremia (109 mmol/L), hypokalemia (2.91 mmol/L), hypocalcemia (
