饥荒的形成及其原因——一种因果关系的整体性方法如何及为何饥饿成为人类灾难本身是一个令人困惑的问题。尽管有各种尝试,但一个全面和经得起检验的理论仍然缺失。本文利用新的数据集,把一系列因素纳入分析中去:人口统计学、政治制度、环境影响以及国际援助,并且在1870-2000年期间对全球范围内的饥荒进行考察。研究结果显示,在这四个领域中的每一个都有助于解释为何某些地方的饥饿比其他地方更严重,但它们都未能单独说明一个国家何时会经历饥荒。然而,当它们一起出现时,则能更好地预测那些最容易发生人类灾难的地方,并且有助于预防这些灾难的发生。
