The gut microbiome of sea turtles is essential for their ecological resilience and adaptation to environmental stressors. We hypothesised that different gut microbial profiles existed between green sea turtles kept in captivity and those in the wild....Comparison of the top four bacterial phyla revealed that Bacillota was the most abundant phylum in captive turtles (40.9-87.5%), but it only ranked second (3.5-57.8%) in wild turtles. Bacteroidota had comparable relative abundance in captive (8.7-45.6%) and wild (3.6-43.1%) populations....By contrast, the relative abundance of Pseudomonadota was higher in wild turtles (6.2-68.1%) compared to the captive population (0.1-6.6%). Verrucomicrobiota was less prevalent in wild and captive populations, with relative abundances ranging from 0.28 to 5.4% and 2.3 to 7.2%, respectively....Nonetheless, the significance of these putative changes is still unknown; the potential to use microbial shifts to guide management, rehabilitation, and conservation of green sea turtles is promising, but remains limited.

Using radiotelemetry, we determined the home range size of S. bealei in its natural habitat, collecting 769 valid activity locations from nine turtles (3 males, 6 females).

In this study, two B. cereus group members were isolated in a previous study from the fecal material of endangered Wood Turtles ( Glyptemys insculpta ) and three additional isolates found in the fecal material of painted turtles ( Chrysemys picta ) were characterized.

Background: How juvenile sea turtles disperse during their first years at sea, known as the "lost years", remains enigmatic....In this paper, we re-analyze the largest extant tracking data set concerning juvenile North Pacific (NP) loggerhead turtles (Caretta caretta), attempting to more precisely characterize their lost years' swimming activity....Combining these data sets, we present a new method to reliably separate, at least on the large scale, the turtles swimming velocity from the drift velocity which includes the impact of the current, the wind and the waves....Conclusion: While open-ocean dispersal of juvenile sea turtles is known to be largely governed by ocean currents, our results demonstrate that juvenile loggerheads' dispersal in the NP is also largely shaped by their well-organized large-scale swimming activity which involves ample

Red-eared sliders (Trachemys scripta elegans), Mississippi mud (Kinosternon subrubrum hippocrepis), and musk turtles (Sternotherus odoratus), are found throughout the Southeastern United States and represent different ecological microhabitats and life histories....In spring 2024, male aquatic turtles were caught using hoop nets, and blood samples were taken to assess immune characteristics.

For some species, gonadal sex determination relies on environmental cues and thus ought to match local conditions, which can be accomplished through changes in maternal behavior and/or the sex-ratio reaction norm. Here, we investigate the e...

Soft-shelled turtles may be a potential new host of Cft infection or a vector of foodborne invasive cases due to their biological characteristics of fusion recombinant.

Here, we present a novel method to process low-resolution TDR data at 5-minute intervals and infer diving behaviour from loggerhead turtles (Caretta caretta) during their elusive pelagic life stage spanning extended periods (> 250 days).

Sea turtles are particularly vulnerable due to their temperature-dependent sex determination (TSD) system, which heightens the risk of extreme sex ratio bias and extinction under future climate scenarios.

We collected western pond turtles (Actinemys marmorata and Actinemys pallida) from six San Francisco Bay Area, California, US, ponds; assessed their shells for lesions; and collected shell swabs and keratin scrape samples to evaluate bacteriome differences between the whole shell (swabs) and the affected...We observed a higher relative abundance of Actinobacteriota, Bacteroidota, Cyanobacteria, and Deinococcota in the shell keratin microflora of turtles with shell lesions....Because western pond turtles are under consideration for listing under the Endangered Species Act of 1973 in the US, understanding patterns of shell disease pathologies and the bacteria associated with disease is imperative for the management of current populations.
