While ascomycetes predominantly have a bipolar mating system with a single MAT locus determining the mating type of the cell, there are also species that possess silent MAT cassettes that enable mating-type switching during vegetative growth....In basidiomycetes, the ancestral mating system is tetrapolar, with two independent MAT loci (P/R and HD) collectively determining the mating type of the cell....Some species, however, have a bipolar mating system in which the P/R and HD loci have become completely linked genetically or even fused together, while others exhibit a so-called pseudobipolar mating system in which only partial genetic linkage has been established between the P/R and HD loci.

We locate the genes linked to the tetrapolar mating system on chromosomes 4 and 9, but in contrast to the cereal rusts which have one pheromone receptor gene per haplotype, in flax rust three pheromone receptor genes are found with two of them closely linked on one haplotype.

As such, life-history and mating system shifts, resulting from environmental stressors, may result in changes in seed size and number, with important implications for population stability and productivity.

We assessed reproductive isolation resulting from flowering time differences, mating system differences, and interfertility among four distinct geographic clusters of S. breweri that span the geographic range of the species.

We propose that any genetic monogamy detected in incipient colonies of extant termites may be a consequence, rather than a cause of the initial transition to eusociality; if so, it is a derived mating system that may be a fitness cost in termite evolution.

Despite this, the effect of mating system transitions, and attendant shifts in the intensity of sexual selection, on specific PMPZ traits and loci is still poorly understood.

To test for the impact of the mating system on the evolution of recombination rates, we leveraged a dataset with genetic maps, genome sizes, chromosome numbers, and life history traits in 200 seed plant species....After controlling for the chromosome size effect, the phylogeny, and map quality, we found a joint positive effect of the mating system and longevity on recombination rates, with higher recombination rates in mixed-mating and selfing species....Our results point to the mating system as an important factor potentially shaping the evolution of recombination despite mechanical constraints acting on the number of crossovers per chromosome.

Our findings support a probable tetrapolar mating system in P. pachyrhizi.

Previous studies of its mating system have used microsatellite loci, but low allelic diversity, particularly in self-compatible populations characterized by low levels of outcrossing, reduces the utility of these markers for more detailed studies.
