Aqueous sulfur batteries are promising for high-performance and low-cost energy storage....However, their energy density is limited by low battery voltages due to the negative potential [E0 = -0.51 V vs standard hydrogen electrode (SHE)] of low valent sulfur redox (S0/S2-) and low discharge capacity (∼300 mA h g-1) of high valent sulfur redox (S2O32-/S4O62- or S4+/S0)....Herein, we develop a reversible alkaline sulfur cathode via introducing Cu2+ and Zn2+ ion mediators, exhibiting a redox potential above 0 V vs SHE, which is higher than low valent sulfur redox and high specific capacity of 1340 mA h g-1....Furthermore, the proposed rechargeable alkaline sulfur batteries achieve a high operating battery voltage of approximately 1.1 V and rapid reaction kinetics, sustained even at high current densities of up to 10 A g-1....Keywords: aqueous batteries; aqueous sulfur batteries; high redox potential; rapid kinetics; sulfur electrochemistry.

Our findings indicate that the sulfur atoms in the core structure of Au13(SR)12 - preferentially bond with Au-thiol monomers. Monomers attached to two adjacent triangular faces form a staple motif of the gold-sulfur chain, releasing a single linear thiol radical.

Lake Cadagno is a meromictic alpine lake characterized by permanent stratification, which creates a permanent anoxic environment that supports the growth of anoxygenic phototrophic sulfur bacteria....A variety of physical-chemical parameters, including temperature, conductivity, light, oxygen and sulfide concentrations, and the community composition of anoxygenic phototrophic sulfur bacteria in the chemocline were recorded, to observe potential influence of external weather conditions....Our findings indicate that, despite the lake's consistent physical and chemical stratification, the composition of the anoxygenic phototrophic sulfur bacteria community exhibited notable variations in response to external environmental factors, including changes in rainfall and light irradiance....Specifically, we observed different growth dynamics in the purple (PSB) and green (GSB) sulfur bacteria communities over the three years of monitoring.

The application of environmentally friendly biological desulfurization (BDS) methods for treating organic sulfur offers significant potential to enhance the utilization of organic sulfur, reduce waste generation, and mitigate environmental harm....Several strains, including Escherichia coli, Rhodococcus erythropolis, and Mycobacterium tuberculosis, have been studied for their sulfur metabolic pathways and regulatory proteins involved in BDS. However, the current understanding of these regulatory mechanisms remains limited....This review outlines the role played by sulfur transport, acquisition and assimilation during sulfur metabolism and biosulfuration in response to sulfur starvation. In addition, we outline the involvement of sulfur starvation-inducible proteins in the L-methionine biosynthetic system....We hope to provide initial insights into the regulation of sulfur starvation-induced proteins....By exploring sulfur metabolism regulatory proteins, this review aims to offer valuable insights for the industrial application of biodesulfurization and unlock new possibilities for future research in this field.
